A Promenade Performance

Aberteifi/Cardigan

A bilingual promenade performance re-enacting the social, economic and political events leading up to the sailing of the Albion from Cardigan to New Brunswick in Canada in 1819 carrying emigrants from West Wales.  2019 marked the bicentenary of the ship’s sailing and was the focus of a series of events and talks led by a local history group CAS (Cardigan Aberteifi Society).  The performance was over-layed on the town’s contemporary spaces; a pizza tipi and quayside hospitality venue, a public quay developed with the idea of providing an amphitheatre style outdoor performance space and a supermarket turned community food bank.  With reference to historical sources but told through the eyes of current community members the event explored and brought into focus the resonance of that history to the life of the town today.

Perfformiad promenâd yn tynnu ysbrydoliaeth o’r digwyddiadau cymdeithasol, economaidd a gwleidyddol a arweiniodd at hwylio’r llong yr Albion o Aberteifi i New Brunswick yng Nghanada ym 1819 yn cludo ymfudwyr o Orllewin Cymru. Ebrill 2019 oedd dyddiad daucanmlwyddiant hwylio’r llong. Gosodwyd y perfformiad mewn gofodau cyfoes y dref; lleoliad lletygarwch ar ochr y cei, gofod perfformio awyr agored a datblygodd ar gei cyhoeddus gyda nod i ddarparu math o amffitheatr, a hen archfarchnad sy newydd gael ei brynu gan eglwys efengylaidd ac yn cael ei ddefnyddio fel banc bwyd cymunedol. Gan gyfeirio at ffynonellau hanesyddol datblygodd y perfformiad ar y cyd gydag aelodau cyfredol y gymuned. Bu'r digwyddiad yn archwilio’r hanes ac yn dod â chyseinedd yr hanes hwnnw i fywyd y dref heddiw.
